Switching Gears – SPELLBINDING update

18 May

Hey there everyone who manages to stumble upon this wee space of web I call my own!

I’m Regina, and I’m proud to say I write sexy, fun, entertaining books. But if you’ve been here for a while, you already know that.

I’m posting today to tell you a little bit about my writing journey, and what it means for you guys, the readers.

I’m a firm believer in the reader. After all, that’s who I am–a reader who’s devoted to her book friends. And as someone who’s been a tireless author-stalker in the past, wondering when the next title in a series will land, I owe it to you guys to let you in on what’s up.

You may remember that my most recent release, CAUGHT IN CRIMSON, was billed as the first in a series called “Spellbinding.” Well, it is. Technically. The bad news is, Spellbinding won’t be continuing right away.

Here’s the thing. I want to write what you guys want to read. And I also want to enjoy what I write. In fact, I’d say it’s VITALLY important for the author to enjoy what she does, otherwise, it’s meaningless. If I were to write a story I didn’t 100% believe in, I’d sooner hang up my quill pen and head to the nearest fast food joint. I’d take just as much pride in flipping burgers as I would writing something I didn’t believe in. More, actually.

BOUND IN BLUE was billed to be my next title. But I wasn’t connecting with it the way I wanted to–no, the way I NEEDED to. I was struggling hard with it. I got words down on paper, but they didn’t feel right. They don’t feel right still.

So here’s what I’m doing… I’m shelving the series for the moment. Not forever, because I do love this world and these stories. But paranormal isn’t where my heart is right now. I keep thinking about INDELIBLY INTIMATE. How much I adored writing that book. How much I loved the tattoo world, artistic personalities, the freedom to be young and make rash choices. And I wanted that again. I wanted to write another story with that aesthetic.

And since my editor and I apparently share a brain, she suggested a particular theme that I’d be good at. I wrote up a quick idea, and long story short, the next thing you read from Regina Cole will be a hot, sexy, and suspenseful contemporary romance called GET ON. Full of motorcycles, pierced and tattooed characters, and lots of heat and heart.

I’m truly sorry if the delay in Spellbinding is causing anyone to be sad! I promise those stories will come, eventually. But I’m figuring out what books my readers like most, and what books I like to write the most. I want to write what makes all of us happy. And for now, GET ON is where my heart is.

With all my love,

Regina

Adam’s brain boggled. He was in Delia Oaks’ apartment. A very messy, very cluttered apartment. He’d been injured by a shadow creature, fucked by a witch, then he’d watched as she blew the shadows to kingdom come. And now, after a nice, pretty normal dinner, he’d been given a magical bandage with the aid of a really cute poodle. What in four fucking hells was going on?

“Let me just lay this out there simply.” She lifted her pointer finger. “One, I am a witch.”

He tried to keep his frustration from mounting. Tough job. “I know. You told me that. How about keeping this conversation grounded in a modicum of reality.”

“It is. As I said, I’m a witch. Two…” Her middle finger raised. “Witches fight Darkness. They’re the creatures that chased us and made your back look like it had a cross between gangrene and frostbite. Normally humans can’t see them, but since you were with me, you got the dubious benefit of their company.”

Adam’s legs shook, aching with the need to pace, to move, to keep from sitting still and facing that what she was saying might be true. If pacing were possible in the tiny apartment’s living room, he’d have considered it. But with the space crammed with furniture, junk and plain old trash? No way. Tensing his thighs, he set his jaw and nodded for her to continue.

“Three, if witches didn’t fight Darkness, those shadows would take over the earth like they’ve taken over the Underworld.” She waggled three fingers in the air.

“And that’s bad.” His statement drew a nod from her.

“Very. The ideas that most people have of Hell? They’re of a Darkness-controlled Underworld. So we witches keep the peace.” Lugh jumped into her lap with a clear snort. She sighed as she ruffled his ears. “And our familiars help.”

“Wait. You want me to believe that you have a poodle for a familiar?” For some reason, the shadow creatures were more believable than a magical fuzz ball. Adam drew back slightly as the dog showed his tiny white teeth.

Yeah, I’m her familiar. I have more magic in my useless dewclaws than you have in your whole body. You give good scratches but don’t think you can talk smack to me and get away with it.

The floor and Adam’s jaw connected with a thump.

“Lugh. I told you to keep quiet.” Delia pointed at the dog with an admonishing grimace.

The poodle lay in her lap, giving Adam the stink-eye. Just tell your stud here to keep the comments to himself. I’m very sensitive.

“That is his voice I’m hearing in my head, right?” Proud of his nearly steady tone, Adam stiffened his spine and pinned the pair with a tell-me-the-truth stare.

Delia sighed and scratched Lugh’s ears. “Yes, that’s him. He was supposed to stay quiet but he had other ideas.” Her gaze caught his. “Listen. I’m really sorry you got caught up in that shit this morning. I’m also sorry that circumstances didn’t let us get to know each other in a more normal way. I like you, but I don’t think this is going to work out.” Her white teeth caught the pink skin of her lower lip.

Adam’s guts went cold. Seriously? He went on one date with a girl, had mind-blowing sex and that was her idea of “not working out”? He searched his fevered brain for any words other than what the fuck?

Seeming pressured, she rushed to fill his silence. “It’s not you, it’s me. There’s this issue within my coven and I’ve got to take a high-level position with tons of responsibility and pressure and stuff, and the timing for a new human relationship isn’t that great for me.”

“So you asked me out for no reason.” He barked a bitter laugh. “Well, at least you didn’t lead me on too long.”

His frank statement stumped her and she tripped over her words. “I, well, that is, you see, I hadn’t planned on…”

“Know what? Forget it.” Adam stood, keeping his fists at his sides. “For what it’s worth, I had a good time tonight and I was willing to give this whole witch thing a shot, even though I was sure you were crazy at first. But if you’re not interested…” He let his shrug finish the sentence and he turned to go. A dull ache settled in his chest. Why had he bothered?

“Adam, wait.”

A glance over his shoulder revealed that she’d stood and was cradling the poodle close to her chest. Her eyes were wide with trepidation.

“I’m sorry. Listen, can’t we be friends? If I find a way to get out of this mess, I’d be really interested in trying again. But right now I can’t commit to anything more than that. So what do you say?” Her words came softly, pleading.

Come on, man, she’s squeezing me too hard. Just say yes.

Adam sighed and stared at the floor. This was a bad idea. A really bad idea. He was going to do it anyway. “Fine. Just don’t crush the poodle.”

She let the dog jump to the couch and turned to Adam with a sheepish smile. “Okay, so…friends.” She stuck her hand out.

He shook it, trying like hell not to notice the soft slide of her skin on his palm. The way her breasts rose and fell when she breathed, her freckled shoulders creamy against the low neckline of her white sundress. The way she smelled like coconut and spice, exotic and tantalizing. His cock did push-ups.

Pulling away, he cleared his throat. “Friends it is.”

The silence was heavy. He stared at her, unable to forget how her body had received him that morning. How she’d writhed against him, purring and moaning as if she could never get enough. His blood warmed, flowing thick and wanting in his veins. How could he already want her again so badly? He was acting like a horny teenager with zero self-control. He needed to get a grip, and quick.

Didja like it? I hope so! Enter the Rafflecopter form below for your chance to win lots of good stuff, and don’t forget to like, share, and come back tomorrow for the next post and more chances to win!

Regina’s Sunday Toybox #1

3 Feb wb051454

Hi there, ladies and gents.

Today I embark upon a new journey. I hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to, hehehe. ;)

Today’s post is called “Sunday Toybox” This will be a semi-regular post to review what some of us enjoy very much indeed.

That’s right. I’m talking about sex toys.

As an author, it’s tough to review books. Some see it as being in poor taste, since I write them. Fair enough, but authors are some of the most voracious readers I know!

Because I DO have opinions, and I find it cathartic to share them, I thought I’d exercise my right to trumpet them on this blogspace, in a manner that would be beneficial to all my readers.

So, without further ado, here we go!

Regina’s Sunday Toybox #1-

Butterfly Kiss Waterproof G-Spot Vibe by California Exotic Novelties

First of all, this thing is damn cute. Lookit the little butterfly! And the hearts on the base! And it’s pink! Okay, enough gushing for cripes’ sake.

This little number (and I say little, because, well, it is.) has three vibration speeds, controlled by a little button on the base. The description says it’s waterproof, but I’ve not tested out that particular claim. The material is nice, flexible but firm. And at the price, (currently $14.99 on Amazon, but I think I paid about 10 bucks for it) it’s a nice starter vibe.

That being said, it is rather diminutive. It’s sort of like a tease. The idea gets you motivated, but the little engine gives it all it’s got, captain, and in the end a zucchini might have been more satisfying.

In summation, if you’re a tiny lady, this might fit the bill perfectly. If you’re of normal size, then I say skip the tiny butterfly and move up to something more substantial. After all, nobody likes to be turned on and left wanting.

And one more problem with this particular cutie.

If you leave the batteries in, sometime in the middle of the night it will START UP FOR NO APPARENT REASON,  scaring the shit out of your dogs and making your husband LEAP to your defense, cracking his head on the baseboard in the process. Yeah. It’s possessed by gremlins, also.

In summation, I give the Butterfly Kiss

Is this segment interesting to you guys? Do you like the idea of Sunday Toybox? Any suggestions for things to review, or any comments about the Butterfly?

Come Together, Right Now- How I do Erotic Horror (part 4)

17 Apr

Welcome back, leiblings! Sorry for the gap between postings. Life gets in the way sometimes! If you’re just now joining us, here are parts One, Two, and Three of this series. I’m sharing how I wrote my first erotic horror, in hopes that someone will find this interesting. If not, well, just skip to the bottom, comment and tell me so, and you’ll still be entered to win stuff. Sound good? Thought so.

So when last I blathered on, I’d told you about building the ideas. I’ve got a half-formed hero, a mostly put together heroine, and a creepy giant question mark for the villain. But this is an EROTIC horror. By definition, there needs to be an erotic journey to go along with the horror journey. I’d spent all my time thus far on the horror, so it was time to focus on the erotic side.

I’d gotten Verum and Bryerly alone in the same room. In order for the bow-chicka-wow-wow to begin, something had to change pretty drastically, and fast. Bry has just witnessed the brutal killing of a woman. She’s not in the mood for love, if you know what I mean. BUT Verum has a weapon at his disposal, and I had zero problems utilizing it- the truth.

What if, I thought to myself, Verum’s presence had sort of a truth-uncovering-aura about it? What if Bryerly was more aware of things just by being near him? What if the physical attraction she felt when meeting Verum couldn’t be hidden? What if he reciprocated that attraction?

If a normal person cannot suppress how turned on they are, wouldn’t their inhibitions fly out the window? Why yes, I thought. Yes they would. So a girl like Bryerly, who isn’t the type to fall in bed with a man she just met, would have less of a problem following her instincts. Luckily for Verum (and me!) this technique worked. When she started focusing on the way she was feeling instead of the horrifying memories, the intimacy turned into a life-affirming self discovery.

Okay, love scene problem solved! We had a gory murder, and now a smexy bedroom scene. So let’s get back to the scary, eh? I still have Rafe to think about. Why is he such an asshole? Why did he and his friend kill a woman in the woods at night, and have blood on their faces? What could it have to do with Bryerly and Verum?

It’ll be tough to explain without spoilers, but I’ll give it my best shot in part 5, the final section of this series!

Seductively Creepy-How I do Erotic Horror (part 2)

4 Apr

Thanks for joining me for the second part of this post! If you missed post one, you can find it HERE.

So as you remember, I had the need for the book (editor asked. What can I do? She’s so darn cute) and the blurb, which is like one of those hollow chocolate Easter bunnies. Look at it too closely and you can see it can’t withstand a good poke in the liver. So I had my work cut out for me.

I started the next segment the way all good pantsters do-I wrote.

I know, I know, I’ve sort of turned into a hybrid pantster/plotter. I start to write something, then I’ll stop and draw out a “W” plot graph (if you don’t know what these suckers are, here. Learn. Especially if you, like me, have a weakness in the story arc area). With this story, I had the beginning given to me in my blurb. So I ran with it.

I had a girl who’d seen her jerk boyfriend commit a murder. I had Bryerly. Who was she? How did she see what she saw?

She whispered to me a little, and I wrote it down for reference. Here it is. I referred to this a lot in the beginning, for voice:

            I shouldn’t have done what I did.

It wasn’t necessarily wrong, but I knew that Rafe would be mad with me if I left the car.

I never expected to see what I saw.

The blood, the dark red spill in the moonlight, the way it covered their hands, their bodies…

            Their faces…

            No.

            I shouldn’t have done what I did.

                                                                        -Bryerly Keats.

You may notice a wee bit of similarity to a certain Bon Temps waitress type. In the beginning, there was a lot of Sookie Stackhouse in Bryerly Keats. But as the story went on, Bryerly showed me her true voice, which is a bit more educated, a bit less Southern, and a whole lot more herself. Back to the words in the quote.

Faces? Well that was unexpected. Bryerly had just made this story a whole lot more interesting. Instead of psychotic serial killer story, it was turning into something darker, more paranormal. But I still didn’t know what a Truth Keeper was. And I didn’t know what Rafe and his friends were, or why they were killing people, or why there was blood on their faces. So I wrote a little more. What I discovered surprised me. I wasn’t sure I could come up with something scary, something that would really yell HORROR as well as erotic. But in the first steps of this story, I had a dark mechanic going on for the villains. Still no motivation, but I definitely had an idea of why they were the bad guys.

When Bryerly ran into Verum, the hero, he sort of materialized in my mind. For more about Verum, make sure to see my next blog, part 3 in the “How I do Erotic Horror” series.

And don’t forget, be sure to leave a comment below! To show how much I appreciate each and every one of my blog commenters, I’ll be adding each of your names from now until SINFUL TRUTH releases (April 20th!) into a hat. GIVEAWAY! I’m giving Sexy back

13 Feb

Hey there lovers!

If it’s your first time here, welcome! I’m Regina Cole, author of erotic romance for Ellora’s Cave.  Nice to meet you!

Today I’d like to talk a little bit about love, sharing, and oh yeah, sex. ;)

Valentines Day is tomorrow, and as such, we are expected to grow mushy, doe-eyed, and completely inundated with love. My opinion is, why wait for Cupid? One of my favorite things to do is read a deliciously spicy story, throw on a lacy nightie, and tackle my dear husband when he least expects it. It definitely keeps the romance alive.

We romance readers (and writers) are notoriously warm hearted, giving, and damn sexy. We know what we want and how we want it. So, giant card company who shall not be named, you can have your chocolate, flowers, and canned greetings. We romance lovers are waaaaay ahead of you. While you were talking about fireworks and stars and stripes, we were talking about the same. Just in the bedroom. ;)

That being said, Saint Valentine has given us a pretty primo excuse to be as lovestruck as we want to be. So what are your favorite Valentine’s Day traditions? Do you treat it any differently? Should you?

Please do let me know in the comments! I’ll be picking one lucky winner for a FREE ebook copy of DEAR ADDI, my Ellora’s Cave debut release! This post is part of the With Love Valentine’s Day Blog hop, hosted by the wonderful folks at The Blog Hop Spot! Make sure to stop by their website to check out all the other posters, and possibly win some great free stuff!

Ciao!

DEAR ADDI gets 4 hearts from Sizzling Hot Book Reviews!

1 Feb

Woohoo!!!!

Because all authors google their books obsessively, I found a great review for DEAR ADDI on Sizzling Hot Book Reviews! They gave it FOUR HEARTS, which is awesome!

Here are my favorite lines from the review:

“Addi’s character is so easy to identify with; if you don’t relate to her actions, you’ve thought about doing them at one time or another. Addi’s steamy scenes with Jackson don’t over take their love story; Regina Cole does a wonderful job of balancing out the moods of the relationship. Addi and Jackson share many light hearted times together, and frankly just being in Addi’s head alone would be enough to keep me entertained.”  -Angela, Sizzling Hot Book Reviews

Please stop by and check out the whole review! And please, don’t forget to pick up a copy of DEAR ADDI. If you like contemporary romances with plucky heroines and intelligent, sexy heroes, then this is one you shouldn’t miss.

Click the banner to read the review, and I’ll chat with you later, loves!

Ciao!

More good news!

23 Jan

Hi loverlies! The goodness keeps on rolling around here. I promise to start chatting with you more frequently, but at the moment I’m inundated with wonderfulness!

I had to let you know that my erotic horror romance novella, SINFUL TRUTH, has been accepted for publication by Ellora’s Cave! Get ready for Verum, a deliciously mysterious cursed Egyptian warrior, and Bryerly, the sweet country girl that’s caught in the middle of some brutal killings around her town. When these two get together, keep your A/C handy. I think you’ll need it. ;)

I should be able to post the cover for your viewing pleasure soon. Until then, ciao bellas!
